Floor tiles lifting, popping up or tenting in your Rainham home? What causes it, why it can happen suddenly, and how the floor is relaid so it stays down.
Floor tiles that lift, rise into a ridge or pop up with a crack, sometimes called tenting, are under pressure from movement they cannot absorb. Tiles and the floor beneath expand and contract with temperature and moisture, and without movement joints around the edges and across large areas, that pressure has nowhere to go but up.
Other causes include adhesive that did not bond properly, a floor underneath that moves or holds damp, and underfloor heating that was switched on to full heat too soon after tiling. It can happen suddenly, often with a loud crack, and lifted tiles can have sharp edges, so keep people off the area. Do not try to glue them back down yourself, because the pressure underneath will simply lift them again.
In Rainham we see it on larger open-plan floors in the newer homes around Beam Park, and on conservatory floors in South Hornchurch where temperatures swing. The fix is to lift the affected tiles, find the cause, and relay with proper movement joints and full adhesive cover.
Lifted tiles can have sharp edges and may crack further. Keep people and pets away.
Large or warm floors need flexible joints at the edges and across the floor.
Heating must be brought up slowly after tiling. Full heat too soon can lift tiles.
Poor adhesion or a moving, damp base can also cause lifting.
Affected tiles are lifted and relaid with movement joints and full adhesive cover.
Usually expansion with no movement joints, poor adhesion, a moving base, or underfloor heating turned up too fast.
Lifted tiles can be sharp and a trip hazard. Keep off the area until it is fixed.
Often, if matching tiles are available and the cause is dealt with.
Pressure builds up over time and then releases, which is why tiles can pop with a bang.
